Documenting Dignity: A Conversation on the Transformative Power of CRVS

Civil registration and vital statistics (CRVS) systems are more than administrative tools. They are powerful enablers of dignity, protection, and inclusion. A new podcast episode, Documenting Dignity: The Power of Civil Registration and Vital Statistics, produced by the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP), highlights the importance of CRVS systems in ensuring that no one is left behind.

Research on CRVS in the Pan American Journal of Public Health

Civil registration and vital statistics systems are the cornerstone of public health data, underpinning efforts to monitor vital events such as births and deaths. The Pan American Journal of Public Health has released a special issue dedicated to the digital transformation of CRVS systems across the Americas, a timely and critical focus as countries continue to modernize these foundational systems.

During the week of 23-27 June 2025, leaders from across Asia and the Pacific will gather for the Third Ministerial Conference on Civil Registration and Vital Statistics (CRVS), a landmark event hosted by the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) in close collaboration with 16 co-organizing partners.

Assessing Inequalities in Registration of Births and Deaths in Bhutan

This report presents findings from an inequality assessment of births and deaths in Bhutan between 2017 and 2022, based on Civil Registration and Vital Statistics (CRVS) data from the Bhutan Civil Registration System. Developed in collaboration with ESCAP and the Department of Civil Registration and Census, National Statistics Bureau (NSB) of Bhutan, the report was strengthened through expert input, technical support and feedback provided by ESCAP.

CRVS research plays a vital role in strengthening civil registration systems by assessing completeness and quality through complementary data sources such as surveys, censuses, and demographic surveillance. It helps identify gaps in the registration of key life events such as birth, death, marriage, divorce, and legal identity acquisition.
