Building better CRVS systems through research and evidence-based solutions

CRVS research plays a vital role in strengthening civil registration systems by assessing completeness and quality through complementary data sources such as surveys, censuses, and demographic surveillance. It helps identify gaps in the registration of key life events such as birth, death, marriage, divorce, and legal identity acquisition. Operational and impact research can also further support the scale-up of successful interventions by providing insights into what works, why, and under what conditions. Recognizing the need for innovation and more resilient CRVS systems, ESCAP supports countries, institutions, and individuals in developing approaches that are informed by evidence and enriched by knowledge generated through ongoing and applied research.
