Online birth registration is now available in Japan
TAGS

Under Japan’s family registration law, parents must submit a birth registration document and a doctor-issued birth certificate to their municipal government within 14 days of their child’s birth. From the end of August 2024, physical submission of necessary documents to a municipal government is no longer required. Both birth registrations and birth certificates can be submitted online in Japan. By 2026, the government aims to further streamline the process by enabling medical institutions to send birth certificates directly to municipalities as electronic data.
